Panerai and Razer Play to Win
Panerai and Razer Play to Win
Curiosity and imagination are guiding principles for Panerai. The brand consistently seeks new methods, materials, and sustainable solutions. At times that nontraditional spirit leads to unpredictable partnerships, like the one formed between Panerai and Razer, the leading global lifestyle brand for gamers.
At RazerCon 2021, Razer’s digital celebration of all things about gaming and more, the brands recognized their mutual focus on measures to heal the environment and joined in support of a critical ocean preservation project to promote ocean literacy.
The alliance continues with the introduction of Luminor Quaranta Razer Special Edition, a watch that merges high-end horology and the iconic aesthetic of the most recognized name in esports and global gaming. Production will be limited to 500 pieces available exclusively through Panerai boutiques and Panerai.com.
The colors of the Luminor Quaranta Razer—black punctuated by electric green on the small seconds dial and strap stitching—are inspired by the gaming brand’s signature colors, and its 40mm case is composed of eSteelTM coated with DLC. A next-generation metal made of recycled steel, eSteelTM exhibits the same properties as its conventional counterpart; with the addition of DLC (diamond like carbon coating) to its surface, the brushed eSteelTM case takes on a matte black finish.
Luminor Quaranta Razer Special Edition is immediately identifiable as a part of the iconic Luminor collection, a pillar of the Panerai family of adventure-ready watches and distinguished by a cushion-shaped case, including a patented crown-protection bridge. But subtle engravings—a triple-headed snake, Razer’s notorious logo, on the caseback and the Razer name in the brand’s signature font on the crown-protection bridge— explicitly announce its presence as a partner in the design of the watch. In addition, the sandwich dial features gray Super-LumiNovaTM that glows green to harmonize with the Razer’s distinctive palette.
Powered by the P.900 caliber, the Luminor Quaranta Razer Special Edition measures only 4.2mm thick yet features a seconds subdial at 9 o’clock, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a three-day power reserve.
Water-resistant to 10 bar (~100 meters), Luminor Quaranta Razer Special Edition includes the quick release system that allows the strap to be replaced without any tools. Also the buckle features the new quick release system. The feature makes it easy to adapt the watch’s look with the additional strap in black rubber enhancing its potential as an adaptable accessory.
Recycled materials are a critical component of Luminor Quaranta Razer elsewhere: the strap is made from recycled PET derived from post-consumer plastic bottles, as a nod to both brands’ commitment to sustainability. Moreover, the watch will be delivered in packaging composed of 72% recycled material and weighing 53% less than the previous version.
The new Luminor Quaranta Razer is the symbol of the commitment toward sustainability, but it does not end there. Together, Panerai and Razer have partnered with Conservation International, the environmental nonprofit organization, to support marine speciesresearch.
This research has led to the development of sustainable livelihood opportunities for coastal communities, supported the creation of new protected areas, and informed policy changes that protect these species and their ocean environment.
This initiative is an example of the “Panerai Ocean Conservation Initiative” mission developed in partnership with IOC-UNESCO in the framework of the ocean literacy programme of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The “Panerai Ocean Conservation Initiative” is a worldwide educational campaign among 100 universities in the world to enlighten students on how a luxury brand, like Panerai, can be a force for good for the planet thanks to its serious commitment towards sustainability and to educate thousands of students on the importance of the ocean.
